How Do I Inspect My Helmet?
As we ride we tend to pay more attention to the wear and tear of our bike rather than the equipment we wear everyday. A helmet is the single most important piece of equipment to keep you safe, but it is often overlooked. When was the last time you inspected your helmet to make sure it will do it's job in the event of a crash? Here are three easy tips to help you make sure your helmet is safe to ensure a worry free ride. We also offer free helmet safety inspections at all locations, so feel free to bring your helmet in the next time you shop with us!

Tip #1: Check The Date
After a few years, the high-density foam that your helmet is made of begins to break down and become brittle, meaning that it will no longer protect you in the event of a crash. Take a look inside your helmet to find the manufacture date. If the date is five years or older, it is time to replace your helmet. We also recommend storing your helmet in a climate-controlled environment to help prolong its lifespan.

Tip #2: Check For Damage
Countless hours of exposure to heat, sweat, sunscreen, and not to mention the occasional drop or fumble can really take a toll on your helmet. The foam of your helmet can become more brittle over time making it less likely to protect you in the event of a crash. Look for gaps or gouges in the foam or any cracks in the plastic covering of the helmet. Replace any worn out padding. We recommend replacing your helmet after a crash or high impact to ensure your helmet will give you the most protection.
Tip # 3: Check Your Fit
- Place your helmet on your head with the straps fastened and check the following:
- Front: Place two fingers on your brow. To ensure you have proper coverage and the helmet is level, the bottom of the front of your helmet should touch your fingers.
- Side: The straps should sit just below your earlobe.
- Chin: When the strap is buckled, you should be able to fit two fingers comfortably under your chin.
- Snug fit: Your helmet should also be snug enough not to move when you move your head up and down.
- We recommend purchasing a helmet with an adjustable dial for fine-tuning adjustments.
- Don't forget to check your child's helmet! *Use their fingers when you are making adjustments to their helmet.
