What Is ALS?
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)—often known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease—is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Over time, ALS causes people to lose the ability to:
- Walk
- Speak
- Eat
- Breathe independently
ALS currently has no cure, and the progression is different for every individual. While the disease affects the body, it does not affect cognitive ability—meaning people with ALS remain mentally aware as their physical abilities decline.

What Is Ride to Defeat ALS Texas?
Ride to Defeat ALS Texas is an annual fundraising cycling event that brings riders, families, and supporters together to fight ALS.
The ride supports the ALS Association, funding critical research, patient services, and local care programs for people and families affected by ALS. Riders of all levels participate—some riding in honor of loved ones, others riding in memory, and many riding simply to help move the mission forward.
This fundraiser aligns with that same mission: community-powered action to defeat ALS, honoring Jamie Dartez and supporting those currently living with the disease.
